Debt Settlement Letters

Is there a right or Wrong way to Write Debt Settlement Letters?

It can happen to anyone. Bills get out of hand and the creditors keep knocking on your door. Once you get an agreement with them however, how do you keep it from changing?

The answer is a formal written outline of the agreement reached with the company. It's not enough to simply have an agreement over the telephone or even an email. You need a well written letter in a clear form to be admissible as evidence. If you decide to ignore this important step, you may end up paying on an agreement that could then be ignored or 'forgotten" by the company.

There are many sources that claim to tell you how to more effectively write debt settlement letters. There really isn't that much of a trick to it however. Although you can pay for a course, download templates, or even buy software to write debt settlement letters and other business related correspondence, you don't need to do any of these things. The Internet has many databases of free writing samples, and

you can download any number of good business writing examples, then copy the style freely.

Of course, writing debt settlement letters isn't just simply a matter of having a professional layout (although lacking a good layout could definitely sink your letter.) To write a business letter, or any professional document for that matter, it is crucial to learn how to be a good writer. Writing debt settlement letters is really no different than writing short stories, when looked at from a certain perspective. You need to be certain that key points are outlined and explained so that everyone involved understands what is to happen. Lack of clarity is one of the reasons why our court systems are so jammed with problems today. The key in both story writing and business writing is understanding how to put words together to convey your message. Remember clarity and lack of ambiguity are critical.

If you want to write the best debt settlement letter, you should start reviewing writing examples. Start by getting the newspaper and seeing if the stories are clearly written. Are there areas where the reader is driven to "assume" how something happened? If so, it's not good writing. You may also want to pick up a popular or classic novel to read. After every chapter, outline what was explained and how it fits into the overall storyline. This will give you an understanding of how a letter or any correspondence that's main purpose is to communicate should be written. Novels start with the broad outline of a story, then detail each important piece as you go through the book.

In the mean time, of course, you can practice writing debt settlement letters yourself. Try to look at it from other perspectives. Is there any other way something you've written can be understood.

Here are a few examples to consider.

Saying 3 months: Is 3 months 90 days, or 3 calendar months, or 3 calendar months from the 1st of the following month.

Saying 4 payments will be made: The question of WHEN comes to mind. And how about how much. If you owe 1,000 dollars are the 4 payments 250 dollars each or 50 for the first month thru 3rd month and 850 on the fourth and final month.

So the key to remember is clarity and being absolutely certain that every point is outlined. If the company is going to forgive 2000 dollars of the debt, be certain to outline this in the letter.

Lastly, send it to the company with return receipt requested and registered letter services from the Post Office. This keeps the credit company from claiming they never received the letter. You can never be to careful when working out a debt settlement program
