Foodservice Industry

Foodservice Industry is one of the Most Robust and Treacherous Businesses to Start.

With the relatively low barrier to entry, there seems that there's a new restaurant opening on every corner throughout the country. Food service from the hot dog cart to the fancy themed restaurant and everything in between is some of the most robust and fastest growing niche markets in the country for the budding entrepreneur.

The U. S. Department of Labor reports that the outlook for work in the foodservice industry is growing by leaps and bounds. If you're looking for a job or a career in this popular business, then you've chosen wisely. Of course, the key to consider is what part of the business you plan to actually get into that makes the difference. There's a big business dealing with used restaurant equipment for example.

There are all kinds of opportunities for growth in this career path. Opening a specialty restaurant however is much more risky in the food and hospitality niche unless you have a unique selling proposition. Take a peak at some of the ways that you can make a stable income for yourself and your loved ones, in the foodservice industry.

Entry level jobs like waitress or waiters, bus hops, kitchen help, and hostesses allow anyone interested in the business to learn from the ground up. If you're unsure if you want to go into this type of work as a professional in the foodservice industry, then get your feet wet, and see if you might like it.

From these entry positions, there is a wide range of growth opportunities including sommelier or wine steward, matre'd, and a variety of chef positions. As a business, a top drawer restaurant establishment can mean an investment of several millions of dollars. The hot dog cart is a little less however :o)

Still, some of the business choices in this industry include chefs, managers, assistant managers, business owners, and many other types of jobs. You can get the hand up in being promoted up the ladder of success by going to college and getting a degree in hotel and restaurant management. Of course, if you're the kind that loves to cook, a culinary school would be the route to go. It’s still possible to work your way up in the foodservice industry, but it will take longer for managerial positions.

Professional restaurateurs in foodservice have a lot of responsibility including food preparation law compliance. Although it's easy to open a restaurant or food establishment, it's a lot more difficult to keep it running. The number of sanitation laws are increasing it seems almost weekly. If you're planning a business that involves not food prep but food manufacturing, or ready to eat meals, the laws dramatically increase. Making and marketing a simple candy type is very labor intensive and is a challenge to bring to the market.

As you can tell working in any facet of food service is a labor intensive career. Its rewards are not only financial but emotional as well. Watching people have a good time must be important for anyone considering a food focused business.
